Mi Farm Market - Ellsworth location

MI Farm Market is a family-owned and -run business located in Northwest Michigan. With more than 20 years of experience, they are specialists in gourmet food gift boxes; marketing over 300 Michigan made products from over 80 Michigan producers.  They operate two stores, one in Ellsworth, Michigan and a second location in the historic building “Grand Traverse Commons” in Traverse City.  Although the majority of their business is mail order, you are always encouraged to stop by their stores when you are in northern Michigan.

The company partners with more than 50 Michigan producers located throughout the State, including cottage industry food manufacturers and artists on a consignment basis, and assists many low-income workers in finding an outlet for their products.

Growing with OppFund

Since receiving two loans from the OppFund, they have purchased a new packing machine called a “shrink tunnel” for shrink wrapping the baskets, purchased additional inventory and hired seasonal workers all to better accommodate their order process.

Mi Farm Market has reached capacity in the building they rehabbed and nonprofit is interested in moving in which will allow Mi Farm to move to a larger location. They will be asking the OppFund to help them once again to purchase a larger building, which they will also rehab. They believe in bringing life back into their communities by using the assets already available. In addition, a larger location will allow them to help lend some “work space” to the local “food entrepreneurs” that service them. This will create shared space, shared energy and consolidate some distribution.

Giving Back to the Community

When you are active in your community, the community gives back to you.
— Scotty Bruce, Mi Farm Market

Before Christmas, Mi Farm Market partnered with their suppliers and an organization called Angel Ambassadors to send baskets to many Veterans, active and retired, and families of deceased veterans, to say “thank you” for serving our country. They included Christmas cards written by local business, churches, and community volunteers to express their gratitude. The response was overwhelming. Just like Mi Farm Market owner Scotty Bruce says, “when you are active in your community, the community gives back to you.”

The OppFund is proud to work with people like the Bruce Family, to lend your and our capital, to help them achieve their entrepreneurial dreams.  The next time you need a great gift, think spending your dollars at home and order a “Made in Michigan” gift.   Check out their products at mifarmmarket.com.
